Andover Native Assumes Command of NAVFAC in Washington

September 16, 2021 by Navy Office Community Outreach

By Regina Adams, Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command Public Affairs

WASHINGTON— Capt. Eric J. Hawn, a native of Andover, Massachusetts, relieved Capt. Gregory G. Vinci to become the tenth commanding officer of Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Washington since its establishment in July 2004 and Naval District Washington regional engineer. NAVFAC Washington held a change of command ceremony on the Washington Navy Yard Aug. 27.

“To the entire NAVFAC Washington family here and in the field, I look forward to performing to plan, further enhancing our technical competence and solving tough problems together as we deliver vital capabilities to our Navy and our Nation,” said Hawn. “I am thrilled to be part of this great organization.”

Hawn was the Executive Assistant to the Commander, NAVFAC, prior to inheriting a workforce of approximately 1,300 civilian and military personnel who provide a full range of facilities and engineering products and services to Navy, Marine Corps and other federal agencies in Maryland, Northern Virginia and the District of Columbia.

He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in engineering from the United States Naval Academy and was commissioned in 1993. He later received a Master of Science Degree in civil engineering from the University of Washington in 2003.

He is qualified as a Seabee Combat Warfare Officer, registered as a Professional Engineer in the state of Virginia, and is a member of the Acquisition Professional Community.

NAVFAC is the Systems Command that delivers and maintains quality, sustainable facilities, acquires and manages capabilities for the Navy’s expeditionary combat forces, provides contingency engineering response, and enables energy security and environmental stewardship.
Additional updates and information about NAVFAC can be found on Facebook and Twitter.

Trahan and Health Leaders Discuss COVID-19 Response

March 20, 2020 by Doug Sparks

A “Coronavirus Tele-Town Hall” was held with featured speaker U.S. Rep. Lori Trahan. Guests included Dan Berlowitz, chair and professor in the department of public health at Zuckerberg College of Health Sciences at UMass Lowell; Ashish Jha, director of the Harvard Global Health Institute and professor of global health at Harvard University; and Jody White, president and CEO of Lowell General Hospital and Circle Health.

On Friday, Trahan provided updates on federal response efforts. She answered questions regarding efforts to assist low-income people, small businesses and students in the upcoming “phase III” emergency stimulus package. She also took a moment to note the “underreported rise of xenophobic attacks” against those of Asian-American descent.

During the hourlong teleconference, other topics included the role and reaction of community hospitals, the need for increased COVID-19 testing, and precautions people should take to protect themselves against infection.

When asked how community hospitals were preparing to combat the infection, Jody White outlined the need to increase the number of available hospital beds and to protect patients and staff. Additionally, he noted that even while resources are being strained or reallocated, ““Hospitals are still in business. … We still have folks who are coming in who are in need of care.”

Ashish Jha, whose article “This Is How We Can Beat the Coronavirus” was published yesterday in The Atlantic, responded to a question on the anticipated length of the response, “As long as we don’t have a vaccine, the infection will be with us.” He projected we should prepare for the response to last 12 to 18 months, but finished with a note of optimism. “The next 6 to 12 months won’t be easy,” Jha said, “but they won’t be like this.”

Travel Advisory – The Mayflower Grace

June 17, 2016 by Emilie-Noelle Provost Leave a Comment

When you’re thinking of great summer weekend destinations, western Connecticut probably doesn’t come to mind. But if you’re a fan of idyllic country settings, scenic hikes, fly-fishing or browsing antiques shops, it really should have a place on your list. Located in Washington, Conn., about a three-hour drive from the Valley, is The Mayflower Grace, a luxurious country retreat set amid a backdrop of charming Colonial-era villages, farmland and forest.

Once a private school for boys, the Mayflower’s main building combines rustic historic charm with welcoming details that include antique furniture, original artwork and a wide, covered porch that’s perfect for sipping cocktails on a summer afternoon. In addition to 15 guest rooms, visitors to the main building will find a more contemporary dining room with a beautiful garden view, a cozy library and sitting room, and an inviting bar.

Mayflower_Spa_Main
The spa and fitness center at The Mayflower Grace, decorated in soothing whites and soft blues, offers a variety of facials and massages as well as fitness classes. The spa’s beautiful public seating area overlooks a scenic pond, and guests are welcome to relax there even if they are not using the spa’s services. The building also houses an indoor pool, open year-round. A second pool, located outdoors, is open during the summer months.

Three outbuildings, just a short distance away, house the hotel’s remaining 15 guest rooms. The 50-plus acre property also offers its own hiking trail, formal gardens, a pond, tennis courts, an outdoor pool, and a spa and fitness center.

My daughter, Madelaine, and I set out for The Mayflower Grace on a sunny Thursday in May. Relying on directions from a mapping website that I will not name, we took a wrong exit off Interstate 84 and became horribly lost just after passing through Hartford (if using directions from a website, always verify with another source!). Once we realized what had happened, we called the hotel. A staff member was extremely patient while I tried to explain where we were, and was quickly able to help us get back on track.

When we finally arrived at the Mayflower—much later than we’d planned—we were greeted by Markel, one of the friendliest and most helpful bellmen I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. As soon as we stepped through the front door, I was served a glass of Champagne. Harrowing, long drive: forgotten.

We stayed in the Billington Grand Suite, a spacious accommodation with a living room, small dining area, library, bedroom and walk-in closet. There was a gas fireplace, a soaking tub, two flat-screen televisions, and the library was packed full of books. If, however, you’re not looking for that much space, the Mayflower’s more standard guest rooms are beautiful and comfortable, as well.

Our table at dinner looked out onto the grounds, and though there were only a few other diners there that night, the service was spot on. Madelaine, not known for having an adventurous palate, tried the salmon tartare for an appetizer, quickly devouring the entire plate. For my entree, I had the seared duck breast (always a good indicator of a restaurant’s quality), which was perfectly cooked and delicious.

Perhaps the jewel in The Mayflower Grace’s crown is the spa. The contemporary building, decorated in soothing whites, pale blues and grays, overlooks the pond. To maintain the tranquil atmosphere, cellphones and shoes must be left in lockers outside. Treatments include a variety of facials and massages, as well as more exotic experiences called “flower treatment rituals.” A range of fitness classes are also offered.

I enjoyed an “elemental facial,” a customized treatment designed to target each client’s “unique biochemical needs” as part of the spa’s signature Elemental Body Therapies. It was one of the most relaxing facials I’ve experienced, and I must say that my skin looked great afterward.

The worst thing about The Mayflower Grace was having to leave after such a short stay. There was much more to see and do than time allowed. If you go, it might be a good idea to plan activities in advance, unless you just plan to relax. In that case, the only thing you’ll need to think about is which picturesque view to enjoy.
