The 5 Most Science-Backed Cognitive Enhancers for Mindfulness

Nootropics are substances that, if used properly and safely, enhance the cognitive functions of the user. According to PsychologyToday.com, zinc, cocoa, citicoline, pine bark extract and n-acetyl cysteine have the most scientific evidence backing their efficacy and safety for mindfulness.

With the right quantities, daily consumption of these nootropics can help boost mood, focus, energy and memory.

You can familiarize yourself with proper doses, effects and more regarding these substances here.

Fragmented Sleep May Trigger Migraine 2 Days Later

A new study by the Division of Sleep and Circadian Disorders at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston found that people whose sleep is fragmented during the night are at higher risk of experiencing a migraine episode not the next day, but the day after that.

According to MedicalNewsToday.com, Clinical Investigator Suzanne Bertisch and her team found that sleeping for 6.5 hours or under each night, as well as having poor quality sleep, did not correlate with migraine episodes the next day or the day after that.

However, having fragmented sleep was linked with a higher risk of migraine on “day 1.” This is not the day immediately following the night of fragmented sleep (day 0), but the day after that.

“Sleep is multidimensional,” says Bertisch, “and when we look at certain aspects, we found that low sleep efficiency, which is the amount of time you’re awake in bed when you’re trying to sleep, was associated with [migraine] not on the day immediately following, but on the day after that.”

Docs for Socks: Anna Jaques Hospital Partners With Local Podiatrists To Collect Socks For The Homeless

Newburyport Podiatrists Angela Barnes and James J. DiResta once again partnered with Anna Jaques Hospital in the “Docs for Socks” program and collected 400 pairs of new socks for people impacted by homelessness in the Valley. The socks were delivered to Ellie Davis at the YWCA Greater Newburyport who will distribute the socks to the greatest area of need throughout the community.

Why socks? The answer is simple: homeless men and women who live in shelters and on the streets spend much of their time outside and are often exposed to rain, snow, ice and cold temperatures; this leaves many with soaking wet socks and shoes for days or weeks at a time. These circumstances can result in serious infections and ailments, such as immersion foot or frostbite. The best way to prevent these types of conditions is to keep feet clean, dry and warm.

Alcohol Is Killing More Americans Than Ever

More and more Americans are drinking themselves to death. A new study found there were around 72,000 alcohol-related deaths among people over the age of 16 in 2017—more than double the number of similar deaths recorded two decades earlier.

The study, published Wednesday in Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, relies on death certificate data. It found there were almost 1 million alcohol-related deaths among people over age 16 documented in the U.S. between 1999 and 2017. In 1999, there were 35,914 such deaths, amounting to a rate of 16.9 deaths per every 100,000 people over 16 that year; in 2017, the number ballooned up to 72,558, or a rate of 25.5 deaths per 100,000 people.

While there’s no single cause behind the trend—or a surefire way to convince people to drink less—the authors do note that relatively few doctors even ask patients about their alcohol use, especially if they’re older. Among younger people, the problem is more about stopping them from binge drinking.

All of which is to say, here’s some added motivation for those participating in Dry January.

Does Diet Influence Mental Health?

Our brains need nutrients to function. Also, the food we eat directly influences other factors that can impact mood and cognition, such as gut bacteria, hormones, neuropeptides and neurotransmitters.

MedicalNewsToday.com says that one diet that receives a great deal of attention is the Mediterranean diet. According to the recent review, there is some relatively strong evidence to suggest that the Mediterranean diet can benefit mental health. The diet’s inclusion of healthy fats, fiber, vitamins and minerals make for a well-rounded and appetizing catalogue of foods.

One vitamin in particular that has been associated with mood-boosting properties is B12. Those with vitamin B12 deficiencies often experience lethargy, fatigue and memory problems. These deficiencies are also linked with psychosis and mania. For these people, vitamin B-12 supplementation can significantly improve mental well-being.

However, as the authors point out, it is not at all clear if vitamin B-12 would make a significant difference to people who are not clinically defined as deficient.

U.S. Cancer Deaths Sees Largest-Ever Single-Year Drop

The rate of people dying from cancer in the United States has continued to decline for the 26th year in a row, according to a new American Cancer Society report.

CNN.com says an analysis of the data showed that, since its peak of about 215 cancer deaths for every 100,000 people in 1991, the cancer death rate in the United States has continued to fall.
The report found an overall drop of 29% as of 2017, which translates into an estimated 2.9 million fewer cancer deaths than what would have occurred if death rates had remained at their peak, according to the report.
The report noted that declines in death due to four major cancers — lung, breast, prostate and colorectal — reflect the progress that has been made against the disease.

‘Parties With A Purpose’ Teen Volunteers Help To Feed Those In Need

On the Saturday night before Christmas, Lazarus House volunteer Paula McKenna stood in the kitchen of a North Andover home, effortlessly managing a group of animated teens cracking eggs and shredding loaves of bread.

The group made French toast that provided breakfast for more than 100 guests in the Lazarus House Soup Kitchen.

“The kids came to us and said, ‘How do we help?’” said McKenna. While it was her idea to cook for Lazarus House, enormous credit goes to the teens who meet about once a month and have now made nearly 3,000 meals.

UMass Lowell’s Coburn Hall Undergoes Major Renovation

Extensive renovations to UMass Lowell’s Coburn Hall, built in the 1890s and the campus’ oldest building, are being completed in time for the university’s 125th anniversary. Modern features have been added, including technology-enabled “smart classrooms” and research space overlooking South Campus. The building will be home to the College of Education and Department of Psychology when it reopens for classes this month.

With the project comes the restoration of a 64-foot by 10-foot mural that was painted in the 1930s, but has been covered under coats of beige paint since the 1980s. Rediscovered in 2015 by a UMass Lowell art professor, the mural’s restoration emerged as a priority in restoring Coburn Hall. Leading that effort is the chief conservator at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, who has worked to uncover and repair the mural, which depicts a range of images, including iconic scenes around the city of Lowell and its people.

Brown Spring Farm Is Now Permanently Protected

West Newbury’s Brown Spring Farm will continue to be a working farm long into the future thanks to a collaboration between Greenbelt — Essex County’s Land Trust, the town of West Newbury and a new farmer who now has a farm to call his own.

A town meeting vote in West Newbury last spring that approved $200,000 in Community Preservation Act funds for the project enabled the town and Greenbelt to acquire a private Agricultural Preservation Restriction (APR) on the property. The APR, which permanently eliminates the rights to develop the farmland, makes the value of the restricted property affordable to a new farmer.
