WELLNESS TIP OF THE WEEK

Meditation for Anxiety

Labor day is over. School is back in session. The highways are still hot and crowded. Feeling a little anxious? Here are a few tips for those looking for a little serenity from Sarah Wilson, writing for MindBodyGreen.com.

One. Use deep belly breathing. According to Wilson, “A stack of science seems to support the practice [of deep breathing]. Dr. Richard Brown, an associate clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University and co-author of “The Healing Power of the Breath,” says that deep, controlled breathing communicates to the body that everything is OK, which down-regulates the stress response, slowing heart rate, diverting blood back to the brain and the digestive system, and promoting feelings of calm.”

Two. Have a gratitude ritual. Wilson notes that, before bed, she takes time to reflect on who and what she is grateful for. These things can be as simple as finding salmon on sale at the supermarket to as meaningful as getting a call from a close friend.
