GLCF Announces $75,000 in COVID-19 Emergency Response Grants

The Greater Lowell Community Foundation (GLCF) recently provided phase one emergency response grants to Greater Lowell nonprofits serving vulnerable populations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Totaling $75,000, these 60 grants are the first to be distributed from the newly established GLCF COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund, created to meet the need for nonprofit resources and services for the elderly, low-income, immigrants and homeless during these uncertain times. Categories of funding included: food insecure, essential/front line workers, homeless, immigrants, individuals with disabilities/elders, technology support/educational supplies and essential supplies.

 

 

 

An Update on the Greater Lawrence Family Health Center

The support Greater Lawrence Family Health Center (GLFHC) continues to look for new and innovative ways to raise philanthropic support and donations of personal protective equipment. They wish to thank those that have given to the GLFHC COVID-19 Response Fund, as well as the individuals and organizations who have donated to help recognize our hardworking staff.

Their monthly Mobile Food Market at the 34 Haverhill Street site, in partnership with the Greater Boston Food Bank, continues to serve the community as it has for the past three years. Their community support services team leads a group of over 30 staff volunteers on the last Saturday of every month in preparing bags of food and produce for patients in need. Pentucket Bank Processes Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) Loan Applications Through the Night

On April 27, Pentucket Bank processed over 100 Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan applications through the night, securing critical funds for business owners who had applied with the bank.

The Small Business Administration (SBA) released the anticipated second round of PPP funds at 10:30 a.m. in the amount of $351 billion. Despite complications with the SBA portal, the Pentucket Bank team committed to securing funds for their customers, and they worked straight through until just before 3 a.m. when the last of their applications in queue was submitted and authorized.

Business and Community Leaders Launch One Haverhill Fund

Haverhill community leaders launched the One Haverhill Fund to mobilize resources to provide emergency assistance to individuals and families impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The One Haverhill Fund — convened by Rep. Andy Vargas and established by community leaders including Mayor James Fiorentini, Rep. Christina Minicucci, the Greater Haverhill Chamber, Community Action, Inc., Emmaus, Haverhill food pantries, and United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley — will mobilize resources for emergency assistance and expanded food distribution, with a focus on those who are most economically vulnerable during the pandemic. The fund will deploy resources through nonprofit partners to prevent financial crises and displacement for the residents of Haverhill.

Groundwork Lawrence Helps Eight Local Restaurants To Provide 1600 Meals A Week To Families

Groundwork Lawrence (GWL) recently reached out to community and funding partners to collaborate on a COVID-19 relief response. Working with funding partner MassDevelopment’s Transformative Development Initiative (TDI) — a state program for Gateway Cities designed to accelerate economic growth within focused districts — GWL contracted with 8 local downtown Lawrence restaurants to launch a COVID-19 relief response that provides much needed meals to families while also providing critical dollars to local businesses and supporting local jobs.

Blue Lounge Restaurant, Cafe Azteca, Coco’s Cafe & Catering, El Taller Cafe & Bookstore, Grumpy G, Lu’s Cafe & Bakery, Tu Kasa, and Vaka Restaurant have entered into an agreement with Groundwork Lawrence to provide catered meals that are delivered to three community partners: Lawrence YMCA, Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence, and Bread and Roses.

Align Credit Union Donates $10,000 to Hospitals and Food Banks on Pay It Forward Day

Align Credit Union announced that it has donated $10,000 to a group of local hospitals, food banks and food pantries that are helping Massachusetts communities battle the spread and effects of COVID-19. On Pay It Forward Day, which takes place every year on April 28 and is meant to inspire acts of kindness globally, Align donated $1000 to each of the following organizations: A Place to Turn, Anna Jaques Hospital, Danvers People to People Food Pantry, Holy Family Hospital, Lowell General Hospital, Merrimack Valley Food Bank, MetroWest Medical Center, North Shore Medical Center, Our Neighbors’ Table and Wilmington Community Fund Food Pantry.

Speechapalooza Speakers And Speeches Announced

Students from Northern Essex Community College hosted an online public speaking event, Speechapalooza, on Instagram, Facebook and Youtube. Taking place April 29 through May 1, this event was used to collect donations for the college’s COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund.

The fund helps to provide laptops and/or internet access, tuition assistance, and stipends for students dealing with food insecurity, the switch to remote learning and other needs connected to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Greater Lowell Community Foundation Announces Fiscal Sponsorship of Women Accelerators

The Greater Lowell Community Foundation announced a fiscal sponsorship of Women Accelerators, an organization passionate about promoting the advancement of women and bridging the gender gap. Women Accelerators is based in Massachusetts with chapters in Lowell and Cambridge.

The mission of Women Accelerators is to provide a centralized network where career-focused women can access resources tailored to their career goals. By offering educational programs, networking and mentoring, they help women navigate opportunities that nurture female leaders efficiently.  Their vision is to generate a community of like-minded, high-achieving women, who help each other succeed in the workplace.

The Merrimack Valley Immigrant and Education Center Awarded $100,000 from the Cummings Foundation

The Merrimack Valley Immigrant and Education Center was awarded $100,000 through the Cummings Foundation’s “$100K for 100” program to provide low-income immigrants with English as a second language and workplace education classes to support new immigrants and refugees with their quest to be gainfully employed and achieve citizenship status. 

The programming at the Merrimack Valley Immigrant and Education Center helps provide outreach and education as a means to economic viability and opportunity. Merrimack Valley Immigrant and Education Center helps clients learn to read, write, speak English, gain employment and be connected to local resources and are a safe haven and empowerment center for immigrants and refugees in the Merrimack Valley.

AmeriCorps NCCC builds with Merrimack Valley Habitat 

Merrimack Valley Habitat for Humanity (MVHH) welcomed a crew of six AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps team members to work on their Salisbury project for the second year in a row. 

The crew, Noah Basehart, Avery Carlson, Edmond Foster, Grace Helton, Esperanza Jimenez and Simon Morton are aged between 18 and 24 and come from states throughout the country. They are currently working alongside partner families and regular volunteers on the project, which will include seven units of affordable housing once complete. 

Lawrence General Hospital Hosts An Evening of Celebration and Gratitude

In addition to spreading holiday cheer, An Evening of Celebration and Gratitude provided Lawrence General Hospital an opportunity reflect upon all their recent accomplishments, including investments made in their Emergency Center, Santagati Center for surgery and Heart and Vascular Center.

Align Credit Union Welcomes Lydia Vazquez to Management Team

Align Credit Union announced that Lydia Vazquez has joined their management team as vice president of lending compliance. She is responsible for compliance and support relating to all lending services and oversees the administration of lending-related technology. 

Lydia comes to Align with more than 20 years of experience in the lending industry at both banks and credit unions. Prior to joining Align, she was assistant vice president of residential lending operations and originations and fair lending officer at Leominster Credit Union and a senior underwriter and loan systems administrator at Avidia Bank in Hudson, Mass.

Education Professor Wins Fulbright Scholar Award

A UMass Lowell education professor has received a Fulbright Scholar Award to further her efforts to teach students at home and abroad about the intersection of math and South African culture.

Through the prestigious Fulbright award, Iman Chahine, an associate professor in UMass Lowell’s College of Education, will train South African teachers in high-needs districts in how to incorporate indigenous Zulu and Ndebele arts and culture into the high school math curriculum. This will include supporting teachers in the classroom as they implement materials Chahine developed. Chahine will also look at whether the use of the lesson modules leads to academic gains by students.

Kids in Disability Sports, Inc. Wins $1,500 from Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union

Just after the New Year rang in, Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union closed out the last Give-A-Click campaign of 2016 with Kids in Disability Sports, Inc. (K.I.D.S.) as the latest winner. K.I.D.S. received a $1,500 donation from the Credit Union’s We Share A Common Thread Foundation.

The Give-A-Click campaign runs every quarter on the Credit Union’s We Share a Common Thread Foundation website. Community members visit the site to learn about worthy non-profit organizations and vote for their favorite one. The charity with the most votes is awarded a $1,500 donation from the Foundation.

Kids in Disability Sports, Inc. works to provide social, therapeutic and recreational opportunities to individuals living with a variety of disabilities. In addition to a long list of sports programs, they also hold special events including dances, outings, annual awards banquets and visits to college and professional sporting events.

People of the community, Jeanne D’Arc members, employees and the organizations’ supporters are asked to visit WeShareACommonThread.org to help their favorite nonprofits gain a much-needed donation.

Align Credit Union Supports the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Haverhill and Lowell on #GivingTuesday

Align Credit Union supported the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Haverhill and Greater Lowell during this year’s #GivingTuesday. #GivingTuesday is an annual event where businesses, organizations, charities, families and students around the world come together to give thanks by giving back.

Align pledged to match $1,000 in total donations made to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Haverhill and Lowell through each Club’s website. Donations to the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Haverhill will be used to support the Club’s Back-a-Kid campaign. Donations made to the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lowell will be used to support their teen programs.

“The continued #GivingTuesday match support from Align Credit Union has led to our most successful #GivingTuesday campaign to date, raising over $14,000,” said Brian Theirrien, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Haverhill. “We’re grateful for Align’s appreciation of this special day of giving and the impact its success has on our members, the services we deliver and the Club as a whole.”

Penacook Place, Inc. Joins Covenant Health as a Member Organization

Penacook Place’s board of directors announced that the nursing home will become a member organization of Covenant Health, Inc., effective upon securing requisite regulatory approvals. As a member organization, Penacook Place will benefit from the many resources and professional support services of Covenant Health while benefitting from Covenant’s commitment to capital investment in Penacook’s operating resources and property improvements.

Thomas L. Mortimer, Chairman of the Penacook Place board of directors, expressed enthusiasm for the affiliation. “We are pleased to partner with Covenant Health,” he said. “Covenant … has a long track record of exceptional community-based elder care services. We believe that their considerable capital and operating resources will help ensure that Penacook Place will remain a vital resource for the community of Greater Haverhill.”

Penacook Place is a 160-bed nonprofit nursing and rehabilitation center located in Haverhill. Penacook’s roots were established in 1969 as Union Mission Nursing Home by a group of citizens to provide senior health care services for the Greater Haverhill community.

MOVERS & SHAKERS

Joseph Weinstein has been announced as The Steward Health Care System and Holy Family Hospital’s new chief medical officer. Weinstein, a cardiologist, has been a practicing physician for nearly three decades. As the CMO overseeing all medical practices, he will be focused on ensuring best-in-class outcomes and experiences for patients, improving behavioral health access and quality, and leveraging technology to better serve patients and the community.

 

 

Robert Rivers has been elected by the Eastern Bank board of directors to the position of chairman and chief executive officer, the bank announced today. Rivers joined Eastern Bank in 2006 as its vice chairman and chief banking officer, becoming president in 2007, chief operating officer in 2012 and an Eastern Bank director in 2015. A native of Stoughton, Rivers began his banking career in 1982 as a teller while in college.

 

 

Joseph Girard-Meli of Haverhill has been named editorial assistant at Merrimack Valley Magazine. Girard-Meli began his career at the magazine as an intern in 2015 and continued as a freelancer through 2016. He graduated from Northern Essex Community College with a degree in Journalism/Communication and is now working toward his bachelor’s degree at UMass Amherst. His topics of interest include digital media, history and technology.
