Eight Great Things To Do This Weekend – 1/30/20
ONE: Come for the sweet … stay for the savory.
Join Kiss 108’s Billy Costa, of “The Dining Playbook” fame, as he celebrates the best of Merrimack Valley culinary flair during An Evening of Sweet Indulgence … and More! Come sample treats from local restaurants, caterers and bakeries during this fun-filled Saturday night. Be part of the voting as we bestow two prestigious awards: “Best Dessert of the Merrimack Valley” and “Best Appetizer of the Evening.”
Help mark the eighth anniversary of Sweet Indulgence and its historic return to Andover while Sweet Indulgence also recognizes those businesses impacted by the 2018 gas crisis. Visit Feb. 1 at the DoubleTree Andover.
TWO: The Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell is hosting the first-ever Talon Club Comedy Series, a live stand-up comedy series featuring some of Boston’s best comedians. The includes three shows, and it begins Jan. 30 with headliner Carolyn Riley.
Riley has established herself as a smart, stand-out voice in the Boston Comedy Scene and was named the “2018 Funniest Person in Massachusetts” by Laugh Boston. She has opened for national headliners including Melissa Villasenor of Saturday Night Live, Chris Distefano of MTV’s “Guy Code” and more.
You can see Riley live tonight at the Tsongas Center’s Talon Club. Show starts at 8 p.m.
THREE: Cary Memorial Hall will be hosting humorist, author and actor Mo Rocca, who will bring his trademark brand of off-beat news reporting and satirical comedy to the Lexington stage. Rocca’s unique combination of comedy and commentary has engaged and entertained audiences all around the country, while also making them think, and his new book Mobituaries — “an appreciation for someone who didn’t get the love she or he deserved the first time around” — is topping national bestseller lists.
Join Mo Rocca at Cary Memorial Hall this Friday, Jan. 31 at 7:30 pm.
FOUR: Visit the Museum of Printing for Hot Metal Day this Saturday, Feb. 1. Watch demonstrations on their Linotype Model 31 by operator Michael Babcock of Interrobang Letterpress. Cast a name, favorite word or emoji in hot metal on a Ludlow type caster; print a keepsake in the Letterpress Studio; and learn about how the Linotype changed history.
All activity events will be taking place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Haverhill’s Museum of Printing. Fun for all ages!
FIVE: During the 1940s, American photographer Gordon Parks grew from a self-taught photographer making portraits and documenting everyday life in Saint Paul and Chicago, to a visionary professional shooting for Ebony, Glamour, Smart Woman and Life.
For the first time, the formative first decade of Parks’s 60-year career is the focus of an exhibition, which brings together 150 photographs and ephemera. Hosted by Addison Gallery of American Art, the exhibition will illustrate Parks’s early experiences to reveal how these helped shape his groundbreaking style. A catalog with extensive new research and previously unpublished images accompanies the exhibition.
Gordon Parks: The New Tide, Early Work 1940–1950 opens this Saturday, and the exhibit will run through April 26.
SIX: Hosted by the Blue Hill Observatory and Science Center, this year’s Winter Kite Festival will be taking place at Maudslay State Park on Feb. 1. Attend one of the two morning workshops to build your own kite and the watch it fly high! See impressive large-scale kites from members of Kites Over New England and indulge in hot drinks and sweet treats from Changing Tides Cafe and Donut Shop.

SEVEN: By the middle of winter, most New England could use a glimpse of spring or summer. New Hampshire Philharmonic Orchestra’s Winter Idylls: Springtime Visions aims to do just that.
The show will begin with Finzi’s “Rhapsody for Strings,” an idyllic interpretation of the English countryside. Next, set off to the hunt with Haydn’s Symphony No. 73, “The Hunt.” Finally, soaring mountains, dark forests, and cool glens are captured in Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4, the “Romantic.”
You can get a flash of spring this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
EIGHT: Join Cobblestones of Lowell this Sunday for a Super Soulful, Super Sunday Gospel Brunch. Enjoy a delicious meal from Cobblestones of Lowell’s acclaimed staff, as the live music from Tee and the Gents fills the main dining room. It’s all happening this Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
