Rep. Marcos Devers Celebrates Local Educator
One in nine children in Massachusetts lives in a food-insecure household. When children are hungry, it impacts their focus and learning abilities in the classroom. Concerned teachers across the Commonwealth are going above and beyond, often tapping into personal resources, to ensure students are nourished throughout the school day. To recognize the efforts of teachers, Project Bread and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts recently presented the Teacher Champion Awards, and local Lawrence Public Schools educator Sarah Cordero was honored as a recipient.
On Monday, Oct. 7, Rep. Marcos Devers visited Cordero at International High School in Lawrence to deliver a citation for her work as a Teacher Champion. During the event, Cordero gave Rep. Devers a tour of the food pantry that she started with funds from Project Bread and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts.
Cordero says she recognizes the correlation between decreasing hunger in order to increase academic performance. In Sept. of 2018, she raised money to supply students affected by the Merrimack Valley gas explosions with food and other necessities.

Executive Director Anne Moriarty shared a letter from a client, “On behalf of my family, we would like to thank Ruth’s House for supporting our family in tough times. Your donations of clothing, blankets and personal care items have helped throughout these difficult times. Three simple words define Ruth’s House: hope, care and love.
