WELLNESS TIP OF THE WEEK

Headed to Bed? Don’t Forget to Take Out Your Contacts!

By Boston Laser/Boston Eye Group

Those of us who wear contacts have all done it at some point. Whether we genuinely forgot or we’re just feeling too tired and lazy to bother, going to sleep in our contacts is a common problem — but it’s one we should try to avoid whenever possible.

Thomas Steinemann, M.D., clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, was “adamant” to BuzzFeed about the need to take your contacts out before going to sleep. “Sleeping in your contacts is a problem because the contact lens is made up of plastic and it impairs the oxygen flow to your cornea,” he told their reporter.

As such, keeping contacts in for extended periods of time actually alters the physiology of your eye, according to Steinemann. So the next time you’re ready to hit the sack, remember: it’s worth the extra little bit of effort to go to the bathroom and pop your contacts out. Your happier and healthier eyeballs will thank you!

HEALTH IN THE VALLEY

Merrimack College Breaks Ground for New Nursing Center

Merrimack College broke ground on its new Nursing Center on Wednesday, May 1, touting the employment prospects for future nursing graduates as well as the profession’s embodiment of the college’s founding values.

“Here, we will engage hearts, we will enlighten minds, and we will teach generations of Merrimack students to empower lives — their own lives and the lives of their patients,” said President Christopher E. Hopey, Ph.D.

The Nursing Center is the final building in the North Campus Academic Development, which includes North Residential Village, Crowe Hall, the Arcidi Center, the Sanctuary Cafe and the Honors Program. It will have two floors of laboratories, classrooms, study space and faculty offices in 20,000 square feet. It will support a variety of health sciences programs for undergraduate and graduate students.

The College admits its first freshman class of nursing students in fall 2019, and the Nursing Center is expected to open in spring 2020.
