A Guide to 2019 Area Summer Camps

SHED Children’s Campus Summer Programs
SHED Children’s Campus, located on Phillips Academy’s campus in Andover, is a nonprofit organization offering Reggio Emilia-inspired programs for children and youth ages 2.9 – 15 years. Throughout July and August, the organization hosts four summer programs: Monarch Preschool Camp, Junior Adventures, Summer Adventures and Team Adventure. The youngest campers, ages 3 to 5, make up the Monarch Preschool program. Children spend their days engaging in nature-based exploration and inquiry while being exposed to a variety of artistic mediums, gardening, dramatic play, and beyond. Children in Junior Adventures (entering pre-k or kindergarten) and Summer Adventures (grades 1 – 5) enhance their imagination through art, science, cooking, gardening, swimming, movement and more. On Thursdays, children head out on field trips. Team Adventure (grades 5 – 8) provides opportunities for youth to embark on new challenges and explore their community through weekly outings. Participants in the CREW program (ages 14+) learn to share their skills through a custom internship.

Westford Community Access Television Video Camp
WestfordCAT heats up STEM education and turns it into STEAM! Campers explore and develop skills they will use through school and beyond. Schools now use video to enhance learning from science projects to homework assignments. Learning how to raise the quality of video is a skill they’ll use throughout their lives. Hosted in a professional television station, “Lights, Camera, ACTION!” is a fun-filled program that explores all the technical aspects of a television studio: running a camera, operating the sound board and switcher, along with the theatrical aspects of a show production: writing, set designing and acting. Recordings are done with a green-screen background and later edited by the kids. There’s plenty of on-screen time during the WestfordCAT Game Show, video scavenger hunt and in-studio interviews. At the end of the camp, WCAT hosts a premiere showing of all their video creations for family and friends. This week-long program is best for kids from 6th to 10th grade.
