Vintage. Retro. Classic.

No matter what you call it, old furniture and home decor is on trend. It’s cool to collect great vintage pieces to add to your home decor or to repurpose weathered objects with paint or a new design, giving them a contemporary twist.

Mixing and matching new with unique vintage pieces can make your space stand out. Going retro also provides near infinite possibilities for contrast and creativity.

Of course, when it comes to vintage, part of the fun is in the search. While hunting the aisles of markets and boutique dealers, you never know what unexpected surprises await. You might just spot something that with a flash inspiration, and a little glue, can be transformed into an eye-grabbing artifact. The treasured objects of another age are revitalized and given new life. And a new home. Let the search begin!

These wonderful old doors serve as a backdrop for unique, vintage pieces. Such doors can be used as interesting room dividers or as a background. They can rise to the status of art when hung with furnishings. In the foreground, tables, vases and glassware can be interchanged to make small vignettes in your home. Photo by Emily O’Brien.

Numbers and letters are hot right now in the home decor world. They add flair and personality to new or antique pieces. Signs and “sayings” are everywhere in both the vintage businesses and newer furniture stores. Whether they are hand-stenciled, painted or cut from discarded letters, people enjoy the uplifting or comical emotions they produce when hung in the right space. Photos by Emily O’Brien.

Add flowers to vintage Mason jars to brighten any space. Antique luggage gives a sense of adventure to your home, and if you decide to use it, think how easy it will be to spot on the airport baggage carousel. Photo by Emily O’Brien.
