NECC Offers Suicide Prevention Workshop
Northern Essex Community College will host a suicide prevention workshop on Wednesday, Nov. 14, from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. in the Hartleb Technology Center in Room 103B on the Haverhill campus, 100 Elliott St. The YWCA Northeastern Massachusetts, in support of the college’s Title IX Awareness Initiatives, will present this workshop. Domestic violence and sexual assault advocates from the YWCA will lead the workshop on recognizing and addressing warning signs of suicide and its relationship to domestic violence and sexual assault.
This workshop is free and open to the public. Weightlifting May Reduce Your Risk of Heart Attack by Up to 70 Percent, Study Says
A new Iowa State University study has shown that weightlifting for less than one hour per week may reduce a person’s risk of heart attack or stroke by 40 to 70 percent. But don’t go overdoing it — for those performing the exercise for an hour or more, the study showed no meaningful decrease in risk compared to the rest of the weightlifters.
Federal Guidelines Now Suggest Screening All Adults for Unhealthy Drinking
Fortune reports that the United States Preventative Services Task Force has requested that primary care providers screen all their adult patients for alcohol abuse. Unhealthy consumption of alcohol continues to be among the leading preventable causes of death in the country, and on a global scale, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that up to 3 million people lose their lives to alcohol abuse each year.
