WELLNESS TIP OF THE WEEK
The Hairy Truth
by Kristina Dudley from All Care Laser Center
Hair is an interesting aspect of the human body in that many people consider it desirable only when on top of the head. When it’s found elsewhere, we tend to want to remove it. From the back hair that can start to make a man look downright lycanthropic, to the unsightly locks that often compel women to avoid stretching, body hair can be a real irritation. Not only can it negatively affect your self esteem, it can also lead to painful, irritating bumps on the skin (known as “folliculitis”) which can worsen in the summer months due to heat and sweat.
Worse yet, getting rid of hair in the “traditional” ways can provide pains of its own. Just about every one of us has endured the stinging cut of a misapplied laser … and for those of us that have tried wax treatment, well, the less said about that pain the better. Thankfully, there is another way: laser hair removal. It’s the only form of hair removal that provides immediate results while gradually reducing hair growth for life. Plus, working with an expert is a lot safer than taking a blade to your own skin!

by Bonnie Mason
Anna Jaques Hospital has long been at the forefront of innovation. ( sponsored )
When Alison Sekelsky, BSN, RNC, assumed responsibility as Director of Maternal Child Health three years ago at Anna Jaques Hospital, Newburyport, Mass., she knew this. She had worked as staff nurse and clinical educator at the hospital for 14 years previously and enjoyed working with a team that was on the forefront of the health care industry. “I have a wonderful team and without them, none of what we do would be possible.” (read more)

You’ll Never Believe What Country is Now the World’s Healthiest
Yes, even with their struggling economy, it turns out Italy has the world’s longest-living people. It’s quite a strange and disparate pairing of characteristics for the country: while a whopping 40 percent of its young people are unemployed and its state coffers are saddled with massive debt, the average Italian can expect to live into their 80s. Doctors have credited this longevity to a couple important points: one, the “excess of doctors” available to Italian citizens; and two, their diet, which is light on “filler” like carbs and sodium and heavy on healthy veggies. Goat Yoga Comes to New Hampshire
It’s not exclusive to the Granite State, as our last issue of Eight Great Things to Do this Weekend indicates, but Goat Yoga is a relatively new phenomenon that’s started making waves at the farms of Massachusetts’ northerly neighbor. In particular, Jenness Farm in tiny Nottingham, N.H. has seen an influx in visitors since taking on the trend, which costs $22 a session. And while having baby goats roam around might seem like a distraction, antithetical to the purpose and process of yoga, it turns out they’re actually really good at getting people to a state of tranquility and relaxation. Dealing with Insomnia? Blame Your Partner
A preliminary study by researchers at Monash University in Victoria, Australia, has revealed that the partners of insomniacs often give their bedside buddies pretty ineffective advice. Just as a couple examples: 40 percent suggested reading or watching TV, while 35 percent recommended reducing daytime activity, taking quick naps … and even caffeine! Suffice it to say, these are all things that wouldn’t be on any sleep therapist’s list of potential solutions, so perhaps look into professional advice before consulting your mattress mate.
