Eight Great Things to Do This Weekend – 4/27/17
ONE: Blue Ocean Event Center is holding a Seaside Soiree this Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. as the lead-in to its annual Coastal Arts Festival (see #2 for more). In addition to a VIP preview, attendees will get to enjoy live entertainment, a cocktail reception, food stations and the official book release and signing of “Sea Glass: Rare + Wonderful” by C.S. Lambert.
TWO: Whether you can make it to the soiree or not, Saturday’s Coastal Arts Festival is well worth checking out. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., shop for handmade gifts, accessories and decor, attend special workshops, listen to live music and check out the giant indoor sand castle!
THREE: The 12th annual Newburyport Literary Festival takes place kicks off with an opening ceremony at Old South Church on Friday at 5:30 p.m. Jeff Kinney, the award-winning author of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid children’s book series, will share insights and humor — and even sign a copy of your favorite book! Then, on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., enjoy a whole host of presentations from other poets and authors around the region!
FOUR: You may have seen actor and comedian Kevin Farley in “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “Still the King,” and “Superstore” … but now’s your chance to see him live and in-person. He’ll be bringing the laughs to Salvatore’s at Riverwalk this Friday from 6 to 11:30 p.m.
FIVE: Applause Academy MA is putting on their rendition of “13: The Musical” at Chelmsford Center for the Arts this Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. The show tells the story of a teen used to the breakneck pace of New York City life … as he’s suddenly dropped into a sleepy Indiana town following his parents’ divorce. This is, naturally, a great one to bring the kids to.
SIX: If that’s not enough teenage angst for you, Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik’s musical “Spring Awakening” is coming to the Westford Academy Performing Arts Center this weekend! It’s described as a fusion of “morality, sexuality, and rock and roll,” and it’s one that has to be seen (and heard!) to be believed. Showtimes are Friday at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday at 2 and 7:30 p.m.
SEVEN: Been thinking of adopting a canine companion into the family? Last Hope K9 Rescue is holding a Showcase Event at Just Dogs in Newburyport from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Saturday. Meet the organization’s selection of possible furry friends and put down some money toward a potential adoption. Please note that an adoption application must be filled out ahead of the event if you’d like to put a deposit down.
EIGHT: 2016 James Beard Award-winning chef Joanne Chang has partnered with Wine ConneXtion for a Seasonal Wine & Food Tasting to take place on Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. Chang will offer samples of favorites from her bakery, Flour, paired with a selection of seasonal wines and fine cordials.
