Eight Great Things to Do This Weekend – 1/5/17

ONE: The ice skaters cometh… to the Tsongas Center all weekend for the 33rd annual Colonial Classic Synchronized Skating Competition! Catch some amazing routines on Friday, Saturday and/or Sunday starting at 8 a.m.

TWO: Seaglass Restaurant and Lounge has transformed its space into a winter wonderland, complete with a Seaside Ice rink. You can either bring your own skates or rent a pair, but either way, an icy good time is guaranteed! The rink is open every weekend through February from 5 to 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays.

THREE: Telling the story of a young man coming to terms with his sexuality, director Barry Jenkins’ film “Moonlight” has been nominated for dozens of awards and declared one of 2016’s best by numerous top critics. If you missed it last year, The Luna Theater has you covered — they’re showing it on Friday at 7:35 p.m. and Saturday at 8:05 p.m.

FOUR: Merrimack Repertory Theatre will be hosting the world premiere of “The Making of a Great Moment,” an exuberant play-about-a-play in which two actors decide to take their show on the road — by bicycle. Their show’s name? “Great Moments in Human Achievement,” a list which may or may not come to include their own quirky adventure. Catch the play on Friday or Saturday at 8 p.m., or on Sunday at 2 p.m.

FIVE: The largest and longest continually operating sporting expo in New Hampshire is none other than the Rockingham Fishing and Hunting Expo, which is coming to the SNHU Arena this Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m. Check out exhibits from Tim Moore Outdoors, On The Water magazine and more — and bring the kids so they can check out Kids’ Archery and the Live Trout Pond!

SIX: We can tell you how to get to Sesame Street Live — just grab the little ones and head over to Lowell Memorial Auditorium for a show entitled “Make a New Friend.” Beloved characters like Elmo, Grover and Cookie Monster welcome a new pal from India in this live special about embracing diversity. Shows are on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., and on Sunday at 1 and 4:30 p.m.

FOUR: “The Making of a Great Moment” at Merrimack Repertory Theatre.

SEVEN: Shriners Auditorium is playing host to the Massachusetts Bridal & Wedding Expo on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Get ideas for your dream wedding, or better yet, start making it a reality — you’ll have access to a huge selection of gowns, DJs, photographers, venues and more!

EIGHT: If you’re planning a wedding and are thinking of heading to Shriners, keep in mind there’s actually another event for you this weekend — namely 95.7 WZID’s Wedding Expo, which is being held at the Radisson Hotel in Manchester, N.H. this Sunday at 11 a.m. Enjoy browsing a selection of tuxes, bands, DJs and JPs, and participate in a number of contests for fabulous prizes.
