Eight Great Things to do This Weekend – 9/22/16

ONE: Sample the wares of North Andover businesses Cakes by Design Edible Art and The Candy Dish as they come together for a one-day Cake and Candy Tasting at the former’s Johnson Street establishment. Spend your Saturday afternoon sampling sweets, and get a special discount if you book one of the businesses during the event.

TWO: Enjoy the musical stylings of UMass Lowell’s diverse and talented music faculty as they kick off the Chancellor’s Celebration of Music with “Sounding Out!” on Friday at 8 p.m. Expect to hear blues, pop, jazz, folk and more — there are no genre limitations at this event, making for a truly “eclectic and electric” show.

THREE: Revisit the hits of two ’80s hair-metal acts when Ratt and Dokken bring their over-the-top acts to the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom on Friday evening. Hits like “Round and Round,” “Lay it Down,” and “Burning Like a Flame” will take you back three decades.

FOUR: Celebrate the debut of the Addison Gallery of American Art’s fall exhibits on Friday evening with their opening reception. Enjoy viewing the new art, mingle with the guest curators and museum staff, and enjoy a glass of wine and a bite to eat.

FIVE: It’s that time again! An annual tradition will return to the Merrimack River on Saturday when Team Haverhill’s River Ruckus 2016 comes to start a party in the city’s Riverfront Cultural District. Live music, classic cars, entertainment for kids, great local foods, and spectacular fireworks are just a few of the things that will be on offer from noon to 8:30 p.m.

SIX: Science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics: from the crossroads of these five fields comes the Lowell Kinetic Sculpture Race, an event that truly has to be seen to be believed. On Saturday, watch these incredible human-powered works of art as they traverse road, water, mud and sand.
