My Bazaar Life

For collectors who love the thrill of the hunt, or those who are looking for vintage treasures and unique finds, there are two one-of-a-kind happenings to check out right here in the Merrimack Valley. One is the Todd Farm Antiques & Flea Market, a bargain hunter’s paradise that’s open every Sunday from the first Sunday in April until as late in the fall as weather permits. The flea market’s website says it has been “a New England tradition for 43 years,” but many local residents have never heard of it. Every week, more than 240 vendors from all over New England and as far away as New York State set up in the wee hours of the morning. Hard-core collectors arrive before the sun comes up with flashlights in hand, cruising the booths in search of that one special item.
Antique furniture, vintage clothing, handmade yard art, glassware, jewelry, collectibles and just about everything else under the sun can be found here. Different faces are found among the sellers each week, giving you the opportunity to discover something new. You don’t need to be a dealer to sell at Todd Farm. Anyone is welcome to set up a table for a fee of $35. If you are a homeowner looking to downsize, it’s a great way to unload furniture and clutter you no longer need. There is no entrance fee for buyers, and parking is free.
Here are my top three tips for shopping at Todd Farm Antiques & Flea Market:
1. The early bird gets the worm: Hard-core collectors and dealers arrive before the sun and snap up the best of that day’s bargains. Get there as early as possible if you fall into this group, and be sure to bring a flashlight or wear a headlamp.
2. Bring cash: Most sellers do not take credit cards or checks. Cash is king, and it makes negotiating easier. Also, be sure to bring an assortment of bills in case the seller cannot make change.
3. Start your search in the back and work your way forward: Some of the best sellers are homeowners looking to downsize. Getting rid of things is often more important to them than how much money they can make. Often placed at the back of the farm, they can have some of the best items and prices.
Here are my top three tips for selling at Todd Farm Antiques & Flea Market:
1. Arrive early: Setting up takes time, and most of the dealers are ready to do business by 4 a.m. If you arrive after 6 a.m., it’s possible the spaces will all be taken.
2. Bring plenty of cash to make change: Most buyers will carry tens and twenties, so be prepared to make change or you might lose a sale.
3. Price items to move: Reloading the car and bringing things home at the end of the day is not the goal. Buyers are looking for bargains, so price items accordingly if you truly want to unload them.

Another great place to hunt for vintage furniture, clothing and accessories is The Vintage Bazaar in Salisbury. Now in its sixth year, the bazaar is held at Pettengill Farm on one weekend in June and another in September. A little more organized and upscale than Todd Farm, The Vintage Bazaar features boutiques that sell vintage finds, architectural salvage, unique handmade crafts and more. Live music, food vendors and food trucks help make this a fun event for the whole family.
Admission is $10 per person; $15 for early birds. Children under 12 are free. The 2016 dates are June 25 and 26 and Sept. 24 and 25. Directions to the farm and additional information can be found at MyBazaarLife.com.
