Personalize your Kitchen and Bath with COLOR
This past January, I had the thrill of attending the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) in Las Vegas. Proclaimed as “the world’s largest international trade event dedicated to the kitchen and bath industry,” KBIS enables the top vendors to gather in one location each year and show off their newest and most state-of-the-art products. As a designer, it’s an educational experience to see the new introductions, touch the products, and check out the latest innovations.
Color trends interest me, so I was curious to see if white cabinetry would continue to make a strong showing, and whether stainless steel appliances were still king. I wondered if wall tiles, flooring and countertops would still be trending toward gray and greige.
With those questions in mind, I took lots of photos and made mental notes of the colors I spotted in the vendors’ booths as I walked the exhibit floor. I was surprised by how much color I saw. There were stoves and ranges in every imaginable hue, from purple and mint green to pink. I saw kitchen wine coolers in glossy cobalt blue. Turquoise washers and dryers, and bright orange lacquered kitchen cabinets were on display, as well.
So what is happening? Are bright candy colors trending for the kitchen and bath? Actually, I think the trend isn’t really about color at all. I believe the trend is about personalization. A growing number of people are embracing the idea that their homes should express their personalities, and that often involves color. For the past five-plus years, we have overdosed on images of white kitchens with ubiquitous white subway tiles on sites such as Pinterest and Houzz. Spa-like white bathrooms have become ho-hum. At KBIS, I saw cabinetry, appliances and fixtures to suit every color preference and personal vision out there.
Here are a few ideas straight from KBIS to add a little or a lot of color to personalize your kitchen and bath.
1. Colorful Fixtures: If you love color but aren’t ready to make a big statement, try incorporating a small amount of it with your fixtures. Colorful kitchen and bath knobs, handles and pulls are a great way to do it.
2. Colorful Appliances: A pink La Cornue range would certainly be a statement piece, or one that’s purple or orange. La Cornue, Viking and the Italian company Bertazzoni were the three manufactures I saw at the show with the most color choices for appliances.
3. Cabinetry: Today you can choose cabinetry in just about any color you desire. Many manufactures will paint their products to your specifications. A powder room is a great place to make a statement, and a colorful vanity might be just the way to go. You can paint your existing wood cabinets, or purchase new ones in your favorite color.
If you are fearless with color and really want to make a statement, then Signature Kitchens might be a good choice. They have several talented artists on staff who can create designs to your specifications or surprise you with a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.
So if you like color, forget what you see in all the shelter magazines and on the decorating websites. Surround yourself with what makes you happy. After all, it’s your home and your life. Express yourself!
