Style File – Secrets of the Sharp Dressed Man

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]I admit it. I’ve always found menswear to be something of a mystery. I’ve wondered how a bright red and green paisley tie seemed to match perfectly with a purple pin-striped dress shirt. Or how all those layers — the undershirt, the dress shirt, the vest — never look overdone. It all looks just right, all the time. I came to the conclusion that, in the New York City garment district, buried deep inside a vault, sit hundreds of dusty volumes containing style do’s and don’ts for men. Knowing I’d never get my hands on those books, I decided to approach some menswear experts in the area, and I learned there is no secret. Dressing “smart” really comes down to common-sense and paying attention to details. Oh, and the one truth I never wanted to believe: Just about anything goes.

  • A well-tailored suit is always a smart choice for the sharp dressed man. Choose charcoal gray or navy—but never black—for the office or special occasion. Dress it up with the addition of a silver tie bar, one-of-a-kind cuff links or a silk pocket square. Impress a room with all three.
  • Layers complete a classic, casual look, according to Anthony Conte, manager of Farley’s of Newburyport.
  • Conte models a weekend look defined by texture, from his camel-colored corduroy jacket to his sleek suede shoes. Layers create depth and interest especially when paired with a simple dark jean, which he says is the only color you need right now.
  • Use color to show off your personal style. Here, Conte pairs Caribbean blue and sunset orange for a sophisticated yet relaxed spring look.
  • The ultimate style reveal for men, however, is the sock. Make any outfit your own with wild patterns and bold colors. “No rules, just fun,” Conte says.

“No, you don’t have to match perfectly in menswear. In fact, if you’re too well matched it will be noticeable. Dressing well for men is about comfort and fit, and remembering ‘everything in moderation.’ If you’re not comfortable with a trend, for example, make one small change to one of your typical looks. A tie clip or a pocket square will instantly modernize your look — and take it up a notch. Right now, it’s the sock that makes the outfit. The bolder, the better.”

Alan Giblet  –   Giblees Menswear
Danvers, Mass.  l  (978) 774-4080  l  Giblees.com
“A plaid suit coordinates best with a solid, solid-textured, print or nongeometric tie. Like patterns can look great when combined, as long as the patterns are various dimensions. A bold plaid or windowpane pattern would be best coordinated with a finer- or smaller-pattern tie, while a wide-stripe suit can be coordinated with a fine-stripe shirt and possibly another stripe dimension tie. Bolder patterns are fashionable; however, only one item of the three should be bold when dressing in a suit, shirt and tie combination.”

Everett LaRose  –  The Andover Shop
Andover, Mass.  /  (978) 475-2252  /  TheAndoverShop.com
“Gentlemen going to a particular event or meeting should first know their basic surroundings. Know how the people on the other end are going to be dressed and anticipate how they are going to respond to you. If you are well dressed, you will make a much better impression — and first impressions are important. Overdressed?  I don’t think you can be. If you were, you looked better than they did. In terms of suits, men sometimes come in and want to buy a black suit. We don’t sell black suits. Black suits are for clergy. Choose navy or charcoal gray.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
