In October I revisited the Glynn House in Ashland, N.H., a bed and breakfast I’d stayed at twice before and had written about for a newspaper I used to own. If change can do a body good, it also can do wonders for a classic northern New England inn.
Owners Glenn and Pamela Heidenreich have taken this Ashland gem and improved it in ways that range from subtle to bold, in both the physical and psychological sense.
The wonderful inn developed by the previous owners has been molded into a luxurious and comfortable establishment that Glenn Heidenreich describes as “not pretentious, but up-market.” The Glynn House fits in well among its peers in terms of price, appointments and comfort, but it excels at creating a terrific atmosphere for a romantic getaway. Though intimate weddings are a burgeoning specialty, don’t get me wrong: You don’t have to be a newlywed to enjoy the exquisite offerings at the Glynn House.
The three “Rs” of Glenn’s philosophy of inn management are romance, relaxation and recreation, taking advantage of Ashland’s small-town charm and its proximity to the White Mountains and the many activities available there.
Rooms at the Glynn House are gorgeously decorated to create that magical balance of luxury and comfort found in the best B&Bs. Additionally, the Heidenreich family has established a pet-friendly business that pays acute attention to making the earlier presence of four-legged visitors unnoticeable. Whether you are staying in a pet friendly room or not, all accommodations are impeccably clean.
Appointments in each room include tasteful furniture and attention to details, such as providing flat screen televisions that are strategically placed for enjoyment without intruding upon the mood. Whirlpool tubs, a 150-title DVD library, Wi-Fi and other creature comforts are seamlessly worked into this Victorian gem.
Breakfasts at the inn reflect Pamela’s extensive culinary background. The long, single table I remembered from prior visits with the previous owners has been replaced with tables for two that can be put together for group dining or left apart for a more private experience. Either way, the focus is on providing for the guests and fulfilling the primary goal of making them feel welcome.
In addition to the three floors of the main house, a carriage house offers additional suites. The pet friendly rooms are extremely popular, and guests have been known to hang around the kitchen for conversation and a glimpse at the workings of this truly world-class establishment.
The attitude and personality of the hosts are as important to the total inn experience as the physical surroundings. I can say without reservation that the Glynn House is a must-see destination of distinction and that the Heidenreich family has brought a consummate flair to the business that has propelled the inn to a higher level of quality lodging.
The Glynn House is located at 59 Highland Street in Ashland, N.H.
