Travel Advisory – Mountain View Grand – Whitefield, N.H.

Phot0 by Kate Harper

The Mountain View Grand in Whitefield, NH is stately and exquisite, rich in history and lore, but its most endearing quality may be its ability to create an air of down home luxury, a magical balance between elegance and humble country styling.

This Granite State gem came into being through circumstances that are the stuff all great stories are made of: on a dark, stormy October night in the mid-1800s, a carriage transporting a couple heading north overturned in the mud and rain about a half mile from what was then the simple farm of John and Mary Dodge. The driver gave the hapless couple a lantern and sent them on ahead to the Dodge farmhouse to find shelter for the evening.

In the morning, the travelers beheld a breathtaking sight: a panoramic view of the beautiful White Mountains, as yet unbroken by 20th-century development. They fell in love with the view and asked to stay a few more days, rallying their hosts to open their home to other travelers. The Dodge family considered the matter over the winter, and, in the summer of 1866, what began as a suggestion proffered by unexpected guests spurred the creation of the then-called Mountain View House.

During our recent visit, we enjoyed a spacious front room with a magical blend of stately charm and comfort, offering a stunning view across the golf course to the mountains in the distance. The bed was wide and luxurious, the bathroom large and spotless. Space and lighting was utilized well to create a sense of expansiveness.

The hotel offers a dizzying array of things to do, from their own 17-seat theater, to tennis, horse rides, a petting farm, golf, game room and two swimming pools (both indoor and outdoor). The indoor pool sports a stunning wrap-around mural complete with hidden items for young guests to discover.

Dining options feature both a tavern and main dining room. We chose the tavern and enjoyed a sumptuous and reasonably priced meal. Our feast for two included an appetizer, a glass of wine, two cups of coffee plus a serving each of salad, prime rib and tiramisu, all for well under $50. Across the narrow street is a 9-hole golf course clubhouse, which offers its own culinary delights in a more modest atmosphere.

The main function hall is a midsized room that is an architectural delight and perfect wedding reception hall, complete with a domed ceiling and gorgeous chandelier. This lovely hall flows out into the back garden to a small footbridge, featuring babbling water and gorgeous floral arrangements. In a separate building, the Presidents Hall also offers function space with a massive stone fireplace and two-story windows.

On the hotel grounds, a huge fire pit offers visitors a chance to sit out under the bowl of stars to enjoy the night air and the scent of fresh wood smoke.

The Mountain View Grand is a must-see hotel with a story as rich and varied as its many rooms.
