is a publication for and about the people, places, and life in the Valley, from Manchester through Lowell, Lawrence, and Haverhill, and out to the sea in Newburyport. Our goal is to uncover the Valley’s “hidden gems,” be they a person, a business, a physical structure, a memory or anything else that is unique to the place we call home.

All that glitters is not gold

With an enticingly bright and glossy finish, there is a growing trend toward the use of clear acrylic in home furnishings and accessories. Curls gone wild
Londonderry Lancers in China

Hair is a daily battle for most. But for those of us with curls, the battle is more like a war. After years of caring for penguins at the New England Aquarium, deNapoli hit the road determined to raise awareness of their plight: extinction now menaces 13 of the world’s 17 species. She travels throughout New England and as far afield as Antarctica, delivering thoroughly researched programs to children and adults alike.   Subscribe »

Brenda was very excited when she discovered hers – and, being the older sister, she convinced me that I was excited, too. My dad taught us to ski at a small family-owned hill in Groton. The tiny ski area was actually an apple orchard, but welcomed skiers for a few months every winter.

Haute coffee for cold nights
Newburyport

Given the frenetic pace of life today, it’s hard to knock the convenience of grabbing a hot cup of morning Joe at the nearest street corner, courtesy of one of the big coffee chains. But for those of us who consider coffee an integral part of our daily ritual and routine, it pays to slam on the brakes and avoid the endless succession of drive-through windows, to savor coffee in its purest form at an unhurried pace in one of the many upscale coffee bars located throughout the Merrimack Valley.   Subscribe »
